Canada Day Announcement
Hayat for Mayor Announces Plan to Increase Indigenous Representation in the Winnipeg Police Service
WINNIPEG, MB — July 1, 2026
Today, on Canada Day, mayoral candidate Umar Hayat announced a commitment to work toward increasing Indigenous representation in the Winnipeg Police Service to 25%, if elected Mayor on October 28, 2026.
“Reconciliation requires action, not just words,” said Hayat. “If elected, I will work with the Winnipeg Police Service, Indigenous leaders, and community organizations to develop a recruitment and retention strategy with the goal of increasing Indigenous representation in our police service.”
Hayat said greater Indigenous representation can help strengthen relationships between police and Indigenous communities, improve trust, and ensure the police service better reflects the people of Winnipeg.
“My vision is a safer Winnipeg where every community feels respected, represented, and protected. Building a police service that reflects our city’s diversity is an important step toward that goal.”
Hayat emphasized that recruitment should be accompanied by mentorship, career development, and community partnerships to support long-term success.
“Together, we can build a safer, stronger, and more united Winnipeg.”
