HayatForMayor Announces “Winnipeggers First” Commitment to Local Jobs and Local Contracts

Winnipeg, Manitoba — Mayoral candidate Umar Hayat today announced his “Winnipeggers First” commitment, pledging to support local workers and strengthen Winnipeg’s economy by prioritizing local businesses and local employment opportunities whenever the City awards contracts, consistent with applicable laws and procurement rules.

“Every tax dollar should help build a stronger Winnipeg,” said Umar Hayat. “When possible, City spending should create jobs for local people, support local businesses, and keep more money circulating in our community.”

As Mayor, Hayat says he will work to:

• Prioritize Winnipeg-based businesses in City procurement where permitted by law.
• Encourage the use of local workers on City-funded projects whenever possible.
• Increase opportunities for small and medium-sized local businesses to compete for City contracts.
• Promote fair, transparent, and competitive bidding processes.
• Support apprenticeship and skilled trades opportunities for Winnipeg residents.

“Our message is simple: Winnipeggers First,” Hayat said. “Strong local businesses create strong neighbourhoods, good-paying jobs, and a stronger local economy. I want City Hall to be a partner in helping Winnipeg businesses and workers succeed.”

Hayat said his administration would focus on ensuring that City investments deliver the greatest possible benefit to Winnipeg residents while maintaining fairness, transparency, and value for taxpayers.
